An automatic dispenser for lubricants or the like comprises a container, said container having a closed, expansible body filled with electrolytes and a space filled with lubricant or the like. Prior to use, a galvanic element is lodged in a borehole or the like sealed against the electrolyte by means of a seal or the like. When the dispenser is set in operation, the seal is brought into contact with the electrolyte, thereby initiating the electrochemical generation of gas. This results in an increase in pressure in the expansible body, which expands, forcing the lubricant or the like out of the space filled with lubricant or the like. To prevent the dispenser being set in operation inadvertently, to simplify storage and to permit selective combination of various components, the galvanic element (20) is arranged prior to initial use in a cavity (19) in an insert (17) which can be inserted in the container (1), said cavity being sealed by a detachable or destructible foil (21) or the like, and the through borehole (11) in the container for receiving the insert (17) is also sealed against the space (14) containing the electrolyte by a foil (12) or the like which can be detached or destroyed when the insert (17) is inserted.
