PURPOSE: To detect the homogeneity and defect of a coating film by coating a base with a functional coating material compsn., scanning the formed coating film with radiation energy of a specific wavelength and detecting the radiation energy of the specific wavelength released from the coating film. CONSTITUTION: The functional coating material compsn. contg. an effective amt. of a uvescer which absorbs the radiation energy of a wavelengthλ1 and releases the radiation energy ofλ2 and in whichλ1 andλ2 are respectively the wavelengths within the UV parts of the respective electromagnetic spectra is prepd. The base is coated with this functional coating material compsn. and the formed coating film is scanned by the radiation energy of the wavelength rangeλ1 . The radiation energy of the wavelength rangeλ2 released by the coating film is detected. The released radiation energy is 7 correlated, in some cases, with an independently measured standard weight or thickness and the coating weight, the thickness, the homogeneity and the defect of the coating are measured.
