<p>A high definition television image transmission system includes an emission stage for coded information and, after transmission through a limited pass-band channel, a stage for receiving transmitted information, a coding device in turn including three parallel processing branches (701, 702, 703) receiving the sequence of original images, a circuit (770) for deciding from original images and processed images, and a circuit (740) for switching the branch output according to said decision. Said device is characterized in that (a) it also includes a stage for evaluating the movement of the blocks of image rows 2k+1 relative to the corresponding blocks of image rows 2k and 2k+2; (b) the branches (701, 702, 703), designed to deliver three sequences of compressed images containing the same amount of samples to be transmitted at the frame frequency, each include a spatial filter (711, 722, 733); (c) the circuit (770) includes three parallel channels for calculating the distortion between the original images and the three processed images, and a circuit for selecting the branch index corresponding to the least distortion, the second channel using the movement information to reconstruct the images of row 2k+1 from the images of row 2k and 2k+2.
