A magnetic shaft seal comprises a packing ring (1) made of a permanently magnetized plastic, surrounding a rotatably mounted shaft (5) and having on the face nearer the shaft (15) a circular recess (2). The regions of the packing ring adjacent to the recess (2) act as pole rings (3) each of which, together with the shaft surface (5), forms a ferrofluid (7) filled gap. The circular recess (2) between the two pole rings (3) narrows radially outward, preferably forming an arc or a point, and the packing ring (1) has a curved magnetic field in the region of its pole rings (3).
