The subject of the application is formed by a drawing machine having a bridge that can be moved across a drawing sheet and bears a pen head with a mounting for a replaceable drawing pen, whose movement can be controlled electromechanically. Such plotters operate either with a light beam, in which case they are known as photoplotters, or with a drawing pen as pen plotters. In order also to be able to use a pen plotter as a photoplotter, provision is made for the drawing pen (8') to have a housing (14) which is provided with a shutter aperture (20) and with a light-emitting diode (15) which can be switched on and off. For this purpose, the housing (14) can be provided on its exterior with electrical contacts (15, 16) which interact with contacts of the mounting (5) of the pen head (4). <IMAGE>
