A device (11) for separating off pollutants from the exhaust air of plants (12) for coating the rear of carpets has an apparatus (45) for prefiltering and a final filter device (83), each of which are formed by at least two separate units (13, 14 and 44, 54; 81, 82), of which each is assigned to individual or combined exhaust air streams (I-VII) of the plant (12) which are ordered according to different loads and/or to temperature ranges. To separate off condensable pollutants and solid particles, each unit (44, 54) of the apparatus (45) of prefiltering the exhaust air is formed by at least one heat exchange stage (44, 54) which is furnished with a condensate take-off (78, 79). In this manner, such a device (11) can take into account, in its structural design, the different process technologies in the individual sections of a plant whose exhaust air fumes are to be cleaned of pollutants. <IMAGE>
