In that form of the heat exchanger described and claimed in Specification 1,125,822 utilizing bi-metallic fin elements 50 constructed from both high and low conductivity metal extending into the flow path of a heat exchange medium from a wall 22 separating said flowing medium from another medium, all said elements comprise thin bars having flat sides and parallel edges, and whilst all the bar elements are of substantially the same width, their thickness becomes progressively less in successive elements or element groups, e.g. I-II-III-IV respectively, in the direction of the downward gradient of the temperature difference between the media, such that whilst all the elements have substantially the same cross-sectional perimeter, the thickness of the high conductivity portion (i.e. the core 52, Figs. 5-8) and hence the thermal conductivity of the successive elements or element groups is progressively less along said path in said direction. Preferably the fin elements are formed by rolling to the required cross-section, a bimetallic wire consisting of a steel sheath around a copper core. Alternatively a length of high conductivity metal may be nickel plated on its outer surface to form the fin elements. |
