For backlashfree tilting of a mirror in optical apparatus by means of a screw and nut gear mechanism, the rotational axis of the gear (10) and the mirror (19) are perpendicular to each other and the mirror (19) has a rigid curved member (15) whereby it is interactingly linked to the gear. Tilting of the mirror (19) is brought about by rotation of the screw (12) and consequential linear movement of the nut (13) which is held against rotation. The nut 13 has a guide roller (16) against which the curved member 15 is resiliently pressed for relative movement. <IMAGE>
