In a continuous freezing machine having a row of moulds moved by a conveyer through the machine a semi-circular extractor pin C is positioned at each end of each mould and when the pins and frozen product are raised from each mould the pins are rotated through 180 degrees to release the product which falls on to a further conveyer. Each pin has a semi-circular head at its lower end which retains the defrosted product during movement out of the mould, until the pins are rotated. The machine comprises an endless chain 28 carrying moulds B on intermittently driven sprockets 24, 26 the moulds passing beneath a mould filler 30, through an insulated brine tank 32, to a slab (i.e. frozen product) handling zone K and finally to washing and sterilizing stations H, J respectively. At zone K Fig. 6 a defrosting tank 69 of hot water is raised to surround each mould in succession. Gripping means engages the pins C and raises them together with the product clear of the mould. A pusher frame 160, moved horizontally by a rack 174a shifts the pins and product along a guide track (170, Fig. 9) where a twisting yoke (92, Fig. 10) grips the pins C and turns them through 180 degrees thereby releasing the product E which falls on to the further conveyer DC. The various movements of the machine are effected by pneumatic circuits operating piston and cylinder devices through valves, certain valves being arranged to be tripped at the end of the movement of one part of the machine to ensure that one movement cannot commence until the previous movement has been completed. An actuator 27 indexes the conveyer 28 by a ratchet 29. A pneumatically driven rack 140a raises the defrost tank. A pneumatic cylinder 120 drives a rack 106 to raise the product from the tank 69 and cylinder and piston means 190, 238, rotate a gear 180a and a further gear (232, Fig. 11) respectively to traverse the product horizontally and to rotate the pins. |
