[Also in Division C5] In a reactor for the decomposition of liquid hydrocarbons by an electric discharge process solid decomposition products are removed from the electrodes 1 by rotating the electrodes past scrapers 9. The electrodes may have annular grooves 16 into which gas escape holes 15 lead. One electrode and its scraper may be axially movable to adjust the arc path. Instead of disc electrodes, as shown, frusto-conical electrodes may be used (Fig. 6, not shown). The invention may be applied to D.C. and polyphase reactors. Acetylene is produced in the reactor.
