<p>A unitary strand or strip (54) of a blend of incompatible polymers is passed through holes (49 and 50) in plates (41, 42 and 43) one of which (41) is oscillated relative the others by motor (44) so that the strand passing through the holes is subjected to a number of stresses, e.g. shear and tensile, in the bending, rolling, and passing over the edge of the holes, causing initiation and propagation of a number of cracks in the material and the monofilament to split into numerous fibrils.
