PURPOSE:To vary torque with best timing at all times by correcting a specific timing for varying engine torque during speed change operation based on a speed change ratio between a torque converter pump and as turbine. CONSTITUTION:In an automatic having a torque converter, engine torque is varied at a predetermined time during speed change operation so as to maintain a good speed change characteristic. A release means releases a lock-up clutch in a torque converter quickly based on the judgement of speed change in order to obtain a speed change ratio and a speed change ratio between a torque converter pump and a turbine is obtained based on a speed change command, then a specific timing for varying the engine torque is corrected based at least on thus obtained speed ratio. By such arrangement, torque reduction is started or ended with best timing even when an accelerator is stepped relatively quickly or gradually this enabling maximum reduction of speed change impact. |
