A baling machine for forming large cylindrical bales of hay has a conventional baling chamber (54) in which the crop is rolled into a bale (90) by oppositely moving runs (50, 52) of belts (46). The baling chamber (54) is fed by a delivery unit (58, 88) on the underside of the machine. In order to enable the machine to work without stopping during tying and discharge of the completed bale, crop being picked up during this stage is diverted onto a web of belting material (72) which is attached at one end to a coiling shaft (78) and, which at the other is wound round an uncoiling shaft (74). The coiling shaft is driven to wind the web, drawing it from the uncoiling shaft (74), into a spiral (94) with the crop sandwiched in the spiral. When baling in the chamber (54) is re-started, the uncoiling shaft (74) is driven in the opposite direction so as to unwind the spiral (94) on the coiling shaft (78) and the crop released thereby from the spiral (94) is directed into the baling chamber (54).
|
