An antithrombotic medical material comprises a high-molecular substrate (e.g. cellulose, chitosan, collagen or fibroin) to which heparin is bound by means of an epoxy compound which can react both with the amino groups of the heparin and with reactive groups on the substrate (e.g. amino, hydroxy, carboxy or mercapto). The epoxy compound is pref. a diglycidyl compound such as 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether. Heparin is reacted with the poxy compojnd in soln. at pH 7 or greater (e.g. in phosphate buffer or an inert protic organic solvent) (pref. at pH 8-10 and esp. pH 9 at room temp.). The macromer obtd. is then reacted with the high-molecular cpd.
