A single reduction spiral bevel gearbox for a high speed electric railway locomotive needs effective lubrication at both high and low speeds. The gearbox includes a casing (10), an input shaft (15) journalled in the casing and carrying a spiral bevel pinion (19), and an output shaft (16) journalled in the casing and carrying a spiral bevel wheel (26) in mesh with the pinion. A first lubrication system for low speeds comprises an apertured machined shroud (44) fitting closely around the lower periphery of the bevel wheel which flings oil from the shroud into troughs (50) whence it is ducted to the bearings of the shafts. A second lubrication system for high speeds comprises twin vane-pumps on a common shaft driven by the output shaft, which pumps supply oil through parallel duplicated hydraulic circuits to the bearings of the input and output shafts and to nozzles (73) for spraying the pinion teeth. Both systems remain operational at all speeds. <IMAGE>
