An endoprosthesis (10, 10a-10d) is disclosed which are adapted for insertion into a socket (21) formed within the medullary canal of a patient's bone (16). It comprises an elongated stem (12) defining a proximal region (13), a distal region (14), and a distal tip (15). A soft porous member (34) extends distally from the stem's tip. The member can take the form of a pad (35) which has a thickness greater than two millimeters. The stem's distal region (28, 36, 40) is preferably also biocompatible, porous, soft, resilient, deformable, and tissue-ingrowth promoting. The proximal stem can have various combinations of biocompatible, porous, soft and hard tissue-ingrowth promoting regions.
|
