The braking apparatus is used for a turnstile being easily turned when pushed and being automatically braked after the user's passing through. The braking apparatus includes operating members comprising push plates (6) set resiliently on knob frames (5) with springs (7,7') and sliders (9) connected to fixing parts (96), braking members whose braking parts actuate to be selectively in contact with or separate from the inner wall of a drum (17). Each braking part separates from the drum when the push plate is pushed, so that the braking force on a turning shaft is released. If the pushing force on the pushing plate is released, each braking part contacts with the inner wall of the drum, and the turnstile being automatically braked.
