[Also in Division B5] A method of controlling the stroke length of a tool in a machine, such as a sawing or shaping machine, in relation to work pieces of different dimensions comprises detecting the dimension of a workpiece and using the detecting movement to adjust the stroke length to individual predetermined values for different dimensions. As described, the machine is a sawing machine having a gear drive 3 to a shaft 2 carrying a flywheel 4 connected by a rod 5 to one arm 8 of a bell crank lever mounted on a pivot 7. The other arm 9 of the lever has a U-shaped guide in which is slidable a die 10 on a pivot 11 connected to a further die 12. The pivot 11 is connected by a link 13 to the yoke 15 of the saw blade 16, the yoke being slidable in a guide 18 on an arm 17 movable about pivots 21 to raise and lower the saw blade. The die 12 is slidable in a guide 50 in a T-shaped member 49 having a nut 48 engaged by a screw-spindle 46 which is vertically mounted in a fixed bracket 47 and connected by bevel gears 44, 45 with a spindle 43. The latter is connected by a chain drive 40 to a shaft 35 having left and right hand threaded portions 36, 37 respectively engaged with nuts 26 on bolts 27 connected to the jaws of the machine; one of the jaws is pivotally adjustable and can be clamped in its adjusted position while the other jaw is freely pivoted to adapt itself to the workpiece. When the shaft 35 is rotated by a hand wheel 38 to cause the jaws to move towards each other and engage the workpiece, the screw-spindle 46 is rotated to vertically move the T-shaped member so that the die 10 is moved along the guide in the member 9 to alter the stroke length of the saw. Electrical, pneumatic or hydraulic means may be used to convert the movement of the jaws into adjustment of the pivot 11.</p> |
