The invention relates to a method for progressively, evenly, and for a short time, widening the field of the optical devices used in rear-viewing. The field of view 1 in the reflector 2 of the observer 3 limited by the rays 4 and 5 is widened by placing the said reflector on a portion 6 of the wall 7 which produces a constant increase in field in the zone 8 between the rays 4 and 9 and a field extension without change in the zone 10 between the rays 9 and 11, which makes it possible to extend the said field of view 1 to the zone 12. The methods and devices which form the subject of the invention make it possible for an observer to perceive, without deformation, and in step with the widening of his field of rear view, the objects which were not visible to him beforehand. The observer, generally the driver of a vehicle, may thus temporarily extend his field of rear view lateral vision with the maximum chance of correctly discerning obstacles. The devices according to the invention make it possible to supplement the functions currently fulfilled by the rear-view devices equipping vehicles on the outside. <IMAGE>
