Process for removing heavy metals, especially cadmium, from phosphoric acid and, in particular, from wet-route phosphoric acid. The phosphoric acid to be treated is subjected, during a first stage, to the action of a sulphur-containing compound which is soluble in phosphoric acid, and then, during the course of a second stage, to the action of an organic solvent which is miscible with phosphoric acid, the precipitate formed during the second stage being separated, by filtration, from the treated phosphoric acid. Applications to the purification of phosphoric acid.
