An edge-trimming shear having two cooperating disc cutters 10 and 12 has a roller cutter scrap-shear for dividing the trimming into short lengths. The scrap-shear cutter is mounted on the same arbor 13 as one of the discs 12 and co-operates with a drum 16 which is mounted on the same arbor 11 as the other disc. The cutter assembly comprises the arbor 13, a sleeve 22 which is keyed to the arbor and a ring 24 in which are mounted four wedgeshaped cutters (26), Fig. 3 (not shown). The sleeve 22 has recesses 32 and the ring 24 has projections 33 which co-operate in the manner of a dog-clutch, but the projections are narrower in width than the recesses and a rubber packing piece 34, Fig. 4, is inserted on each side of each projection. A shroud ring 36 surrounds the inserts, so that the cutter ring 24 has limited rotational freedom relative to the sleeve 22. This movement accommodates the slight difference between the linear speed of the work material, which is equal to the peripheral speed of the disc cutters, and the effective speed of the scrap cutter blades, which at the beginning and end of their arc of contact with the work material, is slightly less than that of the material.</p> |
