In an optical communication system for transmitting a light beam from a transmitter through transmitting and receiving antennae to a receiver, optical coupling between the transmitter and receiver and their respective antennae is by respective transparent cables each having a refractive index distribution in its cross-section decreasing from a maximum in its longitudinal axis towards its surface substantially in proportion to the square of the distance from the axis. The arrangement is described with reference to a laser system having lens arrangements serving as antennae and the manner of coupling light to and from the guides which are of fibre is described. |
