PURPOSE:To prevent the leakage or leak-out of the fuel gas or electrolyte from the cell edge to an extent causing no problem practically by coating or impregnating a heat-proof and corrosion-proof seal material so that the cross section of the seal layer is formed in an E-shape. CONSTITUTION:Polyethylene tetrafluoride is coated on the periphery of electrode substrates 4, 7 in contact with bipolar plates 1, 1 and is maintained at a high temperature for a fixed time to be solidified with the volatile component being evaporated, thus forming seal layers 31, 32. Since the center matrix is difficult to impregnate the seal material, the width at the periphery is made slightly thin, and the seal material is likewise coated then dried and solidified. After the electrodes and matrix coated with the seal material are pinched by the bipolar plates under pressure, the edge is sealed with the seal material 34. Accordingly, a seal with an E-shaped cross section of the seal layer is formed. |
