The invention relates to a fluidised-bed reactor and a process for its operation and a special use of this reactor for the production of highly pure silicon. In the reactor according to the invention, around a central reaction zone there is an annular heating zone which is heated indirectly via the externally delimiting shell. The support particles of the reaction zone are heated in the heating zone and, in the production of silicon, serve as support for the precipitation of silicon forming in the decomposition of the silanes.
