A single-phase synchronous motor has a stator (10), which is energised electromagnetically by an electrical alternating field, and a permanent-magnet rotor (11) which is arranged such that it can rotate freely in a stator opening (15), which is bounded by at least two stator surfaces (16, 17) which are opposite one another on the rotor (11), leaving an air gap (19, 20) free. In order to make the motor suitable for increased powers, the opposite stator surfaces (15, 16) are aligned parallel to one another and a permanent-magnet auxiliary rotor (21), through which the stator field passes, is connected in a rotationally fixed manner to the rotor (11), the magnetisation direction of which auxiliary rotor (21) is electrically rotated through an angle (ss) of less than 90@ with respect to that of the rotor (11). <IMAGE>
