In a method for electronic background insertion in colour television signals with line-sequentially frequency-modulated auxiliary carrier, the component signals of a foreground signal and a background signal being available as coded colour television signal and an effective signal being derived from the component signals of the foreground signal, the background signal is split into a background luminance signal and a background chrominance signal; a foreground luminance signal and a line-sequential foreground chrominance signal are derived from the component signals of the foreground signal; the luminance signals and the chrominance signals are in each case superimposed linearly, the amplitudes of the chrominance signals and of the background luminance signal being influenced by the effective signal and the amplitude of the foreground luminance signal being essentially independent of the effective signal.
