The pressure modulator piston (6), which defines the modulator chamber (5), interacts with a compressive force by way of a lever mechanism, the lever mechanism having a variable transmission ratio so that, irrespective of the position of the modulator piston (6), the force acting on the modulator piston is always in equilibrium with the compressive force. Only a small actuating force is necessary, therefore, in order to control the pressure in the modulator chamber. The invention relates to the provision of a counter-force, which is represented as compressive force, which acts on a pressure piston (20). The pressure in the chamber (19) is the master cylinder pressure, so that, providing that the master cylinder pressure is not varied during brake pressure control, the force acting on the modulator piston (6) and that acting on the pressure piston (20) are constantly balanced, so that only small actuating forces are ever required. <IMAGE>
