1,070,108. Arc furnaces. EUROPEAN .ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY (EURATOM). April 29, 1965 [April 30, 1964], No. 18140/65. Heading H5H. A crucible of electrically conducting-material comprises cooled walls and means at the bottom of the crucible electrically connected to the crucible contents and insulated from the walls. An arc furnace comprises a Cu crucible 1 cooled by water tubes 2 and surrounded by coil 3, with an electrode 4 in the crucible bottom insulated from the remainder of the crucible by a member 5. Above the crucible is a graphite cathode having an axial bore 7. A " skull " 12 of the material to be melted, e.g. uranium monocarbide, is first formed in the crucible and further material melted in this " skull " with the arc struck in an argon atmosphere. During melting a magnetic field is produced by coil 3, stabilizing the arc and causing the melt to rotate. |
