Oxymethylene polymers are prepared by homopolymerizing a source of oxymethylene units, suitably trioxane, or by copolymerizing it with one or more comonomers, in the presence of, as a chain-transfer or chain-branching agent, not more than 5% by weight of an organic compound containing at least three alcoholic hydroxyl groups in the molecule. Specified comonomers are ethylene oxide and dioxolan. Boron trifluoride and its complexes are the, specified catalysts, while cyclohexane is specified as a suitable solvent. Suitable trihydroxy compounds are trimethylolpropane, sorbitol, erythritol, pentaerythritol, phloroglucinol, glucerol, glucose, and fructose. |
