A large-area high-energy laser mirror (11) and a method for producing such a mirror (11) are based on the fact that plate-shaped segments (16), preferably cut from commercially available silicon wafers, are grouped, as far as possible without leaving gaps, on a support plate (15). Since it is not possible to polish mechanically the effective mirror surface (20) beyond the butt joints (17) of the segments, the butt joints (17) are welded to each other over the entire material thickness of the segments (16) by laser or electron beam welding before the mirror surface (20), which is now closed, is polished, if necessary after any projecting welding seam beads (21) have been removed mechanically. <IMAGE>
