1,219,828. Printing apparatus. CHAMBON Ltd. 21 May, 1968 [22 May, 1967; 13 Dec., 1967], No. 24168/68. Heading B6C. Dampening fluid, such as water, is transferred from trough 1 to a roller 18, and eventually to lithographic printing cylinder 37, by a roller 2, which has an hydrophilic surface and is wiped by a flexible-surfaced roller 7, which is held so that it does not rotate after being contacted by the wetted surface of the roller 2. The roller 2 may have a chromium surface and the roller 7 one of rubber, and the roller 7 may be friction-braked, and be rotated by the roller 2 only until dampening fluid lubricates their contact so that the roller 2 slips against it. The roller 2 may be wiped to a greater or lesser degree by the roller 7 by adjustment of the pressure with which the roller 7 is urged against it. The roller 18, which is flexible-surfaced, may revolve at a constant speed and slip against the roller 2, so that the quantity of water delivered to it can be varied by changing the speed of the roller 2. Alternatively the roller 18 may revolve at a varying speed and drive the roller 2 by contact, slipping only when its speed falls so low that a constant-speed drive operating through a free-wheel device or an electrical equivalent of one takes over to drive the roller 2. The roller 2 may deliver dampening fluid to an inking roller, or to a train of inking rollers 28, 29, 31-36, 38, 39, 41-44, receiving ink from a duct roller 26 and messenger roller 27 and supplying it to a printing cylinder 37. The rollers 33, 34 and 39 of the train are reciprocated axially. The printing cylinder 37 may be replaced by one of a different size and the inking rollers 36 and 44 be moved relative to the rollers 33 and 43 to accommodate it.
|
