A gas-fired instantaneous water heater is so designed that even when the water drawn is not heated to the maximum temperature (warm water), the pre-selected delivery temperature is independent of the quantity delivered per unit time. To this end, a control valve (84) acted upon by the actuator (40, 48) of the flow switch (34) is arranged in the bypass channel (80) in series with the manual control valve (86) for selecting the temperature. When the tapping valve (20) is turned on, the control valve (84) first throttles and then gradually opens the bypass channel (80). The preferred field of application is gas-fired instantaneous water heaters for supplying hot and warm water for domestic use.
