Loose natural fibres are reacted with at least one ethylenic compound under free radical initiating conditions and then formed into yarn or fabric. Preferred fibres are of keratin, e.g. wool. Ethylenic compounds specified are unsaturated mono- and di-carboxylic acids and esters, amides and nitriles thereof, vinyl aromatic compounds, vinyl and vinylidene halides, vinyl ketones, esters of unsaturated alcohols and vinyl heterocyclic compounds, specific compounds of these types being listed. Free radical initiators specified are peroxides, azo compounds and redox systems. The examples describe contacting wool fibres with aqueous liquids containing ferric nitrate, hydrogen peroxide and: (1-3) acrylonitrile, (4) styrene and butyl acrylate and (5) styrene, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate and dibutyl maleate. |
