A carpet is back-sized by applying an aqueous composition comprising a latex of a carboxylated synthetic elastomer and a zirconium compound cross-linking agent capable of reacting with the carboxyl groups in the elastomer, and curing the composition. The synthetic elastomer may be a polymer derived from a conjugated diolefin having 4 to 6 carbon atoms e.g. butadiene, and one or more other alpha, beta-ethylenically unsaturated compounds at least one of which contains an appendant carboxyl group e.g. those based on butadiene-styrene or butadiene-acrylonitrile with itaconic, acrylic, methacrylic, maleic, fumaric, cinnamic, vinylacrylic, ethacrylic acid. The crosslinking agent may be a complex zirconium salt such as an ammonium zirconyl carbonate or bicarbonate having varying ratios of ammonium to zirconyl groups, together with zinc oxide or an aldehyde donor. Starch, fillers such as clays, alumina and calcium carbonate, surface active agents, catalysts, molecular weight modifiers, anti-oxidants may be included in the composition. The starch is preferably a modified starch such as etherified, oxidized, dextrinised, carboxylated or esterified starches, and may be water-soluble or rendered water-insoluble by heating.</p> |
