The invention relates to the use of physiological salts of thiocyanic acid in humans as cosmetic agent for hair care, for maintaining and promoting hair growth and for increasing the resistance of the hair to injurious effects. The composition and the process can likewise be used in productive livestock to increase yields and improve quality (gloss, skin texture, hair strength and elasticity, density and uniformity of the hair coat, softness and strength when processing) in the production of wool, furs, leather or feathers. Sodium thiocyanate or potassium thiocyanate or mixtures of these substances are preferably used. In humans, use is predominantly external (as additive to bath water, to hair lotions, shampoos or cosmetics), and in productive livestock it is predominantly oral by admixture with the feed or by administration with thiocyanate-supplemented feedstuffs.
