Optically active pyridylethanol derivatives, which may be used as components of liquid crystal compositions, have the formula <CHEM> in which R is a C1-C20 alkyl or C1-C20 alkoxy group or a hydrogen atom; m and n are 0 or 1; <CHEM> are each independently a group <CHEM> (in which Y is a hydrogen or halogen atom or a cyano group); and <CHEM> represents a pyridine ring, the nitrogen atom of which may be present at any position.
