A programmable thermostat 45 is disposed at a location remote from a window air conditioning unit 10 controlled thereby. The thermostat has a temperature sensor 35 which itself is optionally remote from the thermostat. The thermostat may be programmed by a hand held remote control. The thermostat has a controller which selectively controls the on/off state of the air conditioning unit 10 in response to (1) a comparison of the time of day with program times stored in the memory to access a corresponding control temperature stored in the memory and (2) a comparison of the ambient temperature sensed by the sensor 35 and the control temperature stored in the memory.
