A liquid-phase process is disclosed for oxidation of p-acetoxyacetophenone to p-acetoxybenzoic acid in high yield in a solvent in the presence of a catalyst and addition of a promoter comprising an acid anhydride of a lower aliphatic carboxytlic acid at an addition rate within specified mole ratio limits, a temperature within the range of from about 200 DEG F. to about 400 DEG F., and a pressure within the range of from about 1 atmosphere to 30 atmospheres. A first portion of the promoter is added at the start of the process, and a second portion of the promoter is added during the process.
