A filter for machine tool lubricant emulsion comprises a band 59 of filter medium, which is progressively unwound from a roll (58) and conveyed round the lower part of the peripheries of two axially spaced rotating wheels 24 and (34), which are spaced inwards of respective side walls 12 and (13). The band is wider than the space between the side walls so that its edge portions 64 are bent upwards and slide along the walls, at least in the region where the band leaves the wheels over a defector roll (39) (Fig.1), which prevents dirt from bypassing the band. Dirty lubricant is fed to the space between the wheels, and the band is supported underneath by an endless carrier belt 53.
