A brake for a lifting device which moves up and down a column 1 has spring-loaded cams 8 which are moved into engagement with a surface 1a of the column 1 when a wedging roller 17 is pulled up a wedge-shaped surface 14 by a centrifugally operated coupling 6 and a strap 16. The coupling runs on the surface la and is pressed against the surface la by a spring 7. An abutment 15 limits the wedging action so that the braking effect can be pre-set by adjusting nuts 13 which control the force which compression springs 9 exert on the cams 8. |
