PURPOSE:To obtain various kinds of foam glass with a simple process, by drying a wet gel having the composition of the objective glass, diffusing cations acting as sintering assistant into the surface of the obtained glass precursor before the completion of the sintering of the precursor and sintering the product. CONSTITUTION:A metal alkoxide (e.g., ethyl silicate) or the metal alkoxide and fine particles of a metal oxide are mixed with ethanol, water and ammonia water, stirred and aged at normal temperature. The aged liquid is concentrated under reduced pressure, hydrochloric acid is added to the resultant dispersion of fine silica particles and the mixture is stirred to obtain a hydrolyzed solution. The prepared liquid sol is gelatinized, put into a drying vessel made of e.g., PP and dried to obtain a porous gel. The gel is immersed in a solution containing a cation capable of forming a sintering assistant such as Na<+>, dried and heated e.g., at 1350 deg.C. The objective foam glass containing a large number of closed cells in the glass can be produced by this process. |
