A cylindrical catamenial tampon formed by winding up and pressing a fibrous fleece is characterised in that the material of the fleece is inhomogeneously distributed along the axis of the tampon so that the tampon is divided longitudinally into zones 7, 8 having alternately large and small densities of material, the zones constituting expansion and adsorption zones respectively. In particular the tampon may be formed by winding up a fleece of cotton fibres or regenerated cellulose fibres, or a mixture of these, on which are elongated elevated portions (Figures 8, 9, not shown) of regenerated cellulose, cotton, porous plastics material, or natural or synthetic fibrous material, the elevated portions forming the expansion zones in the completed tampon. The expansion and adsorption zones may be inclined across the axis of the tampon (Figure 4, not shown) and tufts 6 of fibres may be drawn transversely through the adsorption zones 8. The tampon may be enclosed in a net. |
