In a heavy duty machine tool such as a large lathe, workpiece supporting parts e.g. steadies 15 are mounted on a first bed 11 and the tool carriage and cross slide 26 are mounted on a second bed 13 the beds being supported on separate independent foundations 10 and 12 respectively and means is provided to align and adjust the work steadies to support the workpiece in correct alignment with the cutting tool 28. Preadjustable horizontal and vertical feeler members 36, 37 and 41, 42 are mounted respectively on the cross slide so that the horizontal and vertical axes of the workpiece are aligned with the desired axis of rotation. Contact of the feelers 37 and 42 with the supported region of the workpiece automatically terminates the horizontal travel of the cross slide and initiates the vertical movement of the work steady 15 respectively, the control plunger 17 of the steady being raised by hydraulic means 20 to support the workpiece at the position determined by the feeler 42. Radial supporting members 18 and 19 are manually or automatically adjusted when the central support member has been set. All the members are subsequently locked in their adjusted positions. The tool carriage and steadies 15 are traversable along the beds 13 and 11 by rack and pinions 24 and 16 respectively the steadies being clampable in a longitudinal position by wedges 17. In an alternative embodiment the steady supporting member is a part circular shell which is moved into contact with the circular region of the workpiece which is to be supported. |
