1,196,852. Packaging fluent-solid materials. PACKAGING FRONTIERS S.A. 18 June, 1968 [19 July, 1967], No. 29050/68. Headings B8A and B8C. Apparatus for forming, filling and sealing packages, e.g. tetrahedral packages P, comprises a hollow mandrel 1, around which a packaging tube T is formed, a screw-conveyer 7 rotatable within the mandrel to feed a fluentsolid product out of the lower end of the mandrel and into the tube, and a passage 9 extending longitudinally through the shaft of the screw-conveyer for delivering gas, e.g. nitrogen, into the tube. The tube T is lowered step-by-step by bars 3A, 3B, which also weld the tube longitudinally. The longitudinal seam L is subsequently folded over on to the tube. The screw 7 is rotated during the dwell-periods of the tube to deliver a measured quantity of the product for each package P. The package transverse seams are effected by bars 5A-5D, and the tube is cut between the upper and lower confines of each seam to form the individual packages. The nitrogen introduced through passage 9 flushes air from the package being formed and prevents product deterioration. The upper end of screw 7, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), is rotatably received in a socket (41) formed at the lower end of a gas inlet fitting 43, an annular seal being provided. The screw is driven through a belt and pulley (35) and (33). |
