<p>PURPOSE:To easily and certainly position an article by chucking the piston rod of a memory cylinder and shifting said piston rod to a prescribed position, when a connecting member is connected to the article by rod brakes. CONSTITUTION:When an article F transported by a conveyor stops, said article F is connected to a connecting member 40, and the piston rod 57 of a memory cylinder 55 is chuckd by the rod brakes 58A and 58B. The connecting member 40 is shifted to a prescribed position by a positioning cylinder and stopped by a stopper 47. At this time, the article F is transferred and positioned at a regular working position, and the distance from the stop position to the normal position is memorized by the memory cylinder 55. Then, a piston rod 57 is shifted from the memorized stop position for the article to the normal position, and the connecting member 40 is returned, and also the article F is returned to the original position and the chuck by the rod brakes 58A and 58B is released.
