The metal halide discharge lamp, which is pinched on one side, is provided with a constant magnetic field transverse to the arc. The magnetic-field-creating device is preferably implemented by two rod magnets (20) which are inserted in openings (18) of a reflector (11). The magnetic field causes the arc to oscillate and thus produces a uniform temperature distribution in the discharge vessel (1) so that both in a hanging and a standing position of burning (operating position) the same colour temperature is achieved. <IMAGE>
