In the case of a safety belt retractor with a tightening device, being composed of a drive which is activated when the retractor is actuated, is arranged in the vicinity of the belt-winding shaft of the belt retractor and can be connected to the said shaft via a cable drive in the event of actuation, a locking element being eccentrically mounted on the pulley receiving the drive cable, being held in its rest position by the force of a spring and, in the event of actuation, being pivoted out radially until it engages in a toothing of a coupling part which is connected to the belt-winding shaft, a tooth-on-tooth position of the locking element and the assigned locking toothing is to be avoided. To achieve this, in order to permit the predefined deflection of the locking element (23), a control element (36) is provided which, in the event of actuation, before deflection of the locking element (23), is locked in an assigned control toothing (39, 27) and for the outwardly pivoted position of the locking element (23) to be fixed on the basis of its coupling to the latter. <IMAGE>
