When an arc furnace is ignited, the intention is to avoid the electrode sinking (descending) when it is placed on the material to be melted. According to the invention, the weight of the electrode is measured before it is placed on, and the measured value is stored. When the electrode is placed on, the continuously determined measured value changes with respect to the stored value and a correction signal is generated which is fed to the speed control circuit of the electrode. The control circuit serves to adjust the lift (stroke) of a hydrostatic machine for the winch drive of the electrode.
