The invention is a method for the operation of an internal combustion engine, especially a four-stroke internal combustion engine, the gas being drawn from the cylinder during the compression and combustion stroke and fed to it again during the expansion phase. In this, relatively highly compressed gas, which still contains sufficient oxygen, is used for recombustion in the expansion phase in that it is stored in an intermediate reservoir from the compression and combustion phase until the expansion phase. Excessively high cylinder pressures are avoided but a higher pressure level is maintained in the cylinder as long as possible during the power stroke.
