The invention relates to a process for producing ceramic material based on silicon carbide and/or silicon nitride, characterised in that a) a silicon polymer containing SiH bonds, selected from the group consisting of organopolysilanes, organopolycarbosilanes or polysilazanes, in the presence of a hydrosilylation catalyst is brought into contact with an aliphatic compound which contains at least one multiple bond and b) the reaction product from a) is pyrolysed in an inert atmosphere, in vacuo, in ammonia or hydrogen-containing atmosphere at temperatures in the range from 700 to 1500@C.
